Chapel of Rest

At Wm. Alty & Sons, we have a Chapel of Rest at both our Blackburn and Preston funeral homes. This is where your loved one will be cared for with dignity and respect before their funeral service.

If you wish, you can arrange to visit your loved one in a private, peaceful room, giving you the opportunity to spend time with them and say your final farewell in your own way.

It is completely natural to feel anxious or unsure about visiting the Chapel of Rest. If you have any concerns or would like to know what to expect, please speak to one of our funeral directors beforehand. We will take the time to answer your questions and support you throughout your visit.

Below, we’ve answered some of the questions we’re most often asked about our Chapel of Rest.

The Alty Funeral Service reception

Who can visit the Chapel of Rest?

The person or family members arranging the funeral will decide whether visits to the Chapel of Rest take place and who is invited to attend.

If you would like to visit, we recommend checking with the family or next of kin before making arrangements. With their permission, visits can be made by relatives, close friends, neighbours, colleagues, or anyone who shared a meaningful connection with the person who has died.

How many times can I visit?

You are welcome to visit the Chapel of Rest as often as you wish before the day of the funeral.

There is no expectation or obligation to visit if you do not feel it is the right choice for you. Equally, if you would like to visit but have any concerns or feel unable to do so for any reason, please speak to one of our funeral directors. We will do everything we can to support you and make any appropriate arrangements to help you feel as comfortable as possible.

Chapel of Rest

Where is the Chapel of Rest located?

We have private Chapels of Rest at both our Blackburn and Preston funeral homes. Each provides a peaceful, comfortable setting where you can spend time with your loved one in privacy before the service.

Is there a dress code for the Chapel of Rest?

There is no formal dress code for visiting the Chapel of Rest. We simply ask that visitors dress respectfully.

If the family or next of kin have requested a particular style of dress, or if there are any religious or cultural customs to observe, we kindly ask that these are respected.

For the funeral service itself, many people choose to wear formal or dark-coloured clothing. However, some families may request a different dress code, such as bright colours or more casual attire, to reflect the wishes of their loved one.

Can I take photographs?

We have no policy against photographs being taken in the private room if you are given permission from the family or next of kin.

Do I have to be silent?

As this is an opportunity for you to connect to your loved one, you do not have to be silent in the Chapel of Rest. You are allowed to express your emotions however you feel is right for you in this secure space. Whether you choose to sit quietly, talk to them, pray, reflect, or simply be present, there is no expectation that you remain silent.

We understand that everyone grieves differently, and you are welcome to express your emotions naturally. We simply ask that you are mindful of others who may also be visiting their loved ones and help us maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout the funeral home.

Can children visit the Chapel of Rest?

Yes, children are welcome to visit the Chapel of Rest.

Every child responds to bereavement differently, and parents or guardians are best placed to decide whether a visit is appropriate. During the visit, we kindly ask that children are supervised and remain mindful of others who may also be spending time with their loved ones.

If you have any questions or concerns about bringing a child to the Chapel of Rest, please speak to one of our funeral directors. We will be happy to offer guidance and support to help you make the decision that feels right for your family.

Is the Chapel of Rest pet friendly?

Yes, pets are welcome to visit the Chapel of Rest to say their final goodbye, as we understand they are often an important part of the family.

If you are planning to bring a pet, please let one of our funeral directors know in advance so we can make any necessary arrangements.

Chapel of Rest

How long will my loved one be in the Chapel of Rest?

The length of time your loved one remains in our Chapel of Rest will depend on when they are brought into our care and the date of the funeral.

In many cases, this is around two weeks, although it may be shorter or longer depending on the arrangements being made. If you have any questions about the timescale for your loved one, our funeral directors will be happy to discuss this with you.

Can I visit the Chapel of Rest on the day of the funeral?

In most cases, visits to the Chapel of Rest are not possible on the day of the funeral. This is because our funeral directors will be carefully preparing your loved one and making the necessary arrangements for the funeral service.

If you would like to spend time with your loved one before the funeral, we recommend arranging your visit beforehand.
